Noblesville, IN Lawn Care: Pros and Cons of 4 Popular Turf Grasses

A beautiful lawn enhances the landscape, while a poor one diminishes it. More than their aesthetic value, well designed lawns also aid in erosion control, filter pollutants, supply oxygen, and provide ample space for activities.

Noblesville, IN Lawn Care Pros and Cons of 4 Popular Turf Grasses

One of the most important components of a beautiful lawn is the lawn grass. That said, it’s important to choose the right type of grass for your location and lifestyle. In Indiana, four species of grass are best suited for home lawns: fine fescue, tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, and Kentucky bluegrass. Each of the four most popular lawn grasses come with pros and cons applicable to different situations.

Fine fescue

Fine fescues are more shade-tolerant than other cool-season grasses. They also adapt very well to infertile, acidic soils. Plus, they require little to no fertilizer. Fine fescues, however, are not suited for high traffic areas because they are easily damaged by abrasion, and they are slow to fill bald spots.

Tall fescue

Tall fescues are more resistant to abrasion but less shade-tolerant than fine fescues. They also require regular fertilization. This grass variety is suitable for heavy traffic use but must be seeded regularly to help it thrive.

Perennial ryegrass

Ryegrass has a reputation for being extremely high maintenance, as it requires a strict maintenance program that involves fertilization, mowing, watering, and pest management on a regular basis. Ryegrass does not adapt well to shade or drought conditions. Despite these drawbacks, ryegrass establishes itself quickly and competes well. With the right care, a uniform ryegrass lawn can be achieved in as fast as two weeks.

Kentucky bluegrass

The predominant high-quality lawn grass for northern climates, Kentucky bluegrass has a moderate growth pattern, spreads competitively, and fills in bare spots with ease. This type of grass, however, does not do well in poorly shaded areas. Frequent watering during hot dry periods is required with this grass type.

Worried about lawn care?

The grass you choose for your lawn may not be the one you like best if you’re considering doing most of the maintenance. Then again, you don’t have to make any compromises if you have a reliable lawn care specialist tending to your lawn.
